Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® Official Dates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® Inc. announces Official Year Long Celebration

Brookline, MA -- February 4, 2002 -- /Xpress Press/ -- Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® has designated a one year period being as the Official 50th anniversary of Rock and Roll. This year, from July 5 2004 to July 5 2005, will be the focus of events and activities celebrating this passage. Based on over 18 months of extensive research and analysis, these dates have been selected.

As the official clearinghouse for activities surrounding the event, the first challenge that Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® faced was to determine the time frame for the anniversary celebration. While there were various schools of thought on this, there was no definitive consensus on when this actually occurred. Attempts to identify the "first rock and roll song" were inherently subjective and provoked more confusion than clarity. Eventually the decision was made to look at the emergence of Rock and Roll as a cultural phenomenon rather than attempting to pinpoint a single watershed event. Based on this approach it became increasingly clear that Rock and Roll established itself as part of our collective national consciousness in the 1954-1955 timeframe. As bookends, two important dates were selected:

On July 5, 1954, at Sam Phillips' Sun studios, in Memphis Tennessee, Elvis Presley records "That's Alright Momma" in a legendary recording session.

On or about July 5, 1955 "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets, reaches #1 on the Billboard Charts.

During this yearlong period, Rock and Roll emerged as a major force. Other important events during this period were Chuck Berry's release of "Maybelline" in May of 1955 and Alan Freed's designation of his weekly dance parties in New York as "Alan Freed's Rock and Roll Ball" in the fall of 1954.

The designation of this yearlong celebration in no way means that contributions prior to July 5, 1954 were insignificant. Seminal earlier contributions were made by many including Dewey Phillips, Alan Freed, (who had been using the phrase "Rock and Roll" for several years), Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records and multitudes of Doo Wop, Rockabilly, Rhythm and Blues, and Country and Western artists, writers and producers who were integral in the development and formation of Rock and Roll. This announcement should in no way be construed as an attempt to marginalize these efforts. But as Barry Shein, Executive Producer of Rock and Roll 50th Anniversary says:

"As the official organizers of the Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® celebration, our first responsibility was to put a stake in the ground and fix this in time. You can't have an anniversary celebration without an anniversary. We are confident our designation will be widely accepted by both serious music historians, and the public at large."

Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary® believes this to be a significant cultural milestone. In the very near future we will be announcing a series of events and activities that will honor and celebrate this unique form of music.
